Country of Citizenship

There were over 630,000 non-Irish citizens living in the country last April, or about 12% of the population, according to the Census 2022 results.

Most were citizens of either another European Union country or the United Kingdom, while over 235,000 people were citizens from outside Europe, which was up 86% since Census 2016.

Migration

Of the nearly 90,000 people who moved to live in Ireland in the year leading up to Census 2022, which took place last April, around a quarter were Irish citizens. Most of these Irish people who returned home moved from the UK, Australia, and the US.

It’s worth noting that over 10,000 Indian citizens moved to Ireland in the year leading up to the census as well as over 4,500 Brazilians.

Irish Travellers

Nearly 33,000 Irish Travellers were counted in Census 2022, up 6% from 2016.

The average age of Irish Travellers in 2022 was 27, which was much younger than the general population, which had an average age of 39.

There were also fewer Irish Travellers who reached the age of 65 and over at 5% when compared with 15% for the overall population.
