The following audio files contain quotes from CSO Statistician Deirdre Lynch about Census 2022 Profile 3 - Households, Families and Childcare.

Families

"One of the interesting trends from Census 2022 was that while the number of family units rose by 5% to just under 1.3 million, the average number of children per family fell to 1.34 from 1.38 in 2016.

Looking at the make-up of these families, nearly half were married couples with children, a further 24% were married couples without children, and nearly 20% were one-parent families."

Adults living with their parents

"We can see there has been a marked increase in the number of adults living with their parents in Census 2022, up by 14% since Census 2016 to over half a million people.

Furthermore, nearly six in ten of these adults were male and over half were at work. People aged 20 to 24 were more likely to live with their parents at 61%, compared with 15% of adults aged 30 to 34."

Childcare

"Nearly 50,000 pre-school children were in childcare for more than 30 hours per week, Census 2022 data reveals.

Of the nearly 172,000 primary school age children in childcare, the majority were in care for between one and ten hours per week.

Interestingly, there were marked differences in care options depending on citizenship. While over a third of Irish children were in some form of childcare, only around a fifth of Polish and Indian children were receiving childcare."
