Introduction

The CSO Standard NUTS Regions and County Classification nests counties within regions defined in the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), the overarching framework for regional and territorial statistics in the European Statistical System. This classification incorporates the changes in Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/2066 of 21 November 2016 amending the annexes to Regulation (EC) No 1059/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the establishment of a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) NUTS16.

This classification includes the 26 historical geographic Counties in Ireland. The counties of Ireland are a sub-division of Ireland into twenty-six counties or sub-divide the island of Ireland into thirty-two counties. These sub-divisions were historically the basis for lcoal government and administration, a function that is now associated with local authorities which are available in a separate classification.

The classification is provided in English and Irish.
