Newly developed interactive map allows you to look at maps and download data for towns/urban areas, also known as Built Up Areas (BUAs).
The interactive map provides researchers and local authorities an easy-to-use tool which allows them to create a profile of their local urban areas for planning purposes, and compare different Small Areas, communities and neighbourhoods within their urban area.
The map allows you to compare Small Areas within each town across the country under 15 themes including housing, commuting, families, ethnicity, religion, and age.
Small Areas were designed as the lowest level of geography for the dissemination of statistics in line with data protection guidelines and typically contain between 50 and 200 dwellings. The Small Area boundaries have been amended based on Census 2022 population data.
A new urban geography called Built Up Areas (BUAs) has been used to produce Census 2022 data for urban areas. There is more information on BUAs in the Census 2022 Urban Boundaries and Built Up Areas information pages.

The enhanced Census 2022 interactive map for Urban Areas provides easy access to maps and data specific to each urban area in Ireland
If you have ever wanted to know about the characteristics of different towns in Ireland, the Central Statistic Office’s (CSO) interactive map will help answer those questions. The Census 2022 Urban Profiles is an interactive mapping application where Census 2022 Urban Areas can be visualised on a map. It includes details on the number of Small Areas (see Editor’s Note below) within each town, their communities and neighbourhoods, and associated census data.
This easy-to-use innovative mapping tool allows you to search for your town by name and view the census results for your area. The results are organised under 15 themes such as housing, age, sex, marital status, disability, general health, or education. Data can also be downloaded in CSV format.
Sheelagh Bonham, Statistician in the Census division, said: “This new platform, developed by the CSO, makes it easy to zoom in on any of the 867 Census 2022 Built Up Areas (BUAs) (see Editor’s Note below) or towns in Ireland and allows you to look at the cluster of Small Areas that make up each town.
The data can be viewed in detail under different themes of interest. This means that the mapped data can provide answers to specific questions about the neighbourhoods and communities within a town. This mapping application also allows you to see how areas within a town differ which can support development plans or business and community ideas. It is possible to compare data across towns of similar size, further supporting your information needs.
The interactive map for Census 2022 Urban Areas is available at Census 2022 Urban Profiles.
The CSO welcomes comments and suggestions from users about this new resource and platform which can be sent to census@cso.ie."
