Go to release: Vehicles licensed for the first time April 2022
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (11 May 2022) published Vehicles licensed for the first time for April 2022. These figures are based on the National Vehicle and Driver File compiled by the Department of Transport.
Today’s publication shows that the number of new cars licensed for the first time in April 2022 was 10,045 compared with 8,214 in April 2021, a rise of 22%.
Commenting on the data, Nele van der Wielen, said: “Today’s figures from the CSO show the continued growth in the number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles licensed in Ireland. The number of new electric cars licensed has more than doubled from 3,026 in the first four months of 2021 to 6,748 in 2022. At the same time the number of new diesel cars is decreasing. For the first four months of 2022, 13,340 new cars licensed were diesel cars compared with 17,400 in the same period in 2021.”
Further commenting on the results, Nele van der Wielen, said: “The number of used cars licensed in the first four months of 2022 was 45% less than those licensed in the same period in 2021 (15,287 compared with 27,636).”
Some terms explained:
Vehicle registration is when the vehicle registration tax due on the vehicle is paid to the Revenue Commissioners. Revenue then issues a registration number for the vehicle.
The term vehicle licensing is used when the annual car tax due on the vehicle is paid for the first time.
