Go to release: Ireland's UN SDGs - Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities 2021
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (18 February 2022) published Ireland's UN SDGs – Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities 2021.
This report is the eleventh in a series of CSO publications which monitor how Ireland is progressing towards meeting its targets under the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Commenting on the publication, Kevin McCormack, Senior Statistician, said:
“This new report, Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, has data on 15 indicators for Ireland, divided over four chapters: Society, Environment, Planning, and Infrastructure.
Data are presented in categories such as gender, age group, vulnerable groups, and geographical location, where possible. The SDGs and their associated indicators are, by design, wide-ranging in their coverage. As a result, the Irish data is provided by several sources including Government Departments, official organisations, and international organisations such as the UN. This publication was developed in collaboration with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage."
Commenting further on the publication, Kevin McCormack, Senior Statistician, said:
“For 4.4 million people, (93% of the population), the bus stop was the nearest public transport option. The nearest public transport stop had a minimum of 50 services available on a normal weekday for 1.4 million people, (30% of the population). In contrast, the nearest public transport stop for 938,421 people (20% of the population) had less than five services available daily.
There were 1,077 families homeless in December 2021, according to Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. There were 8,914 people (6,463 adults and 2,451 children) homeless and living in emergency accommodation in December 2021, an increase of 8.7% from December 2020. There were more homeless male adults (4,434) compared to females (2,029).
Ireland generated 3.1 million tonnes of municipal waste in 2019, up 6% from the previous year. Of this, 52% came from households and 48% came from commercial sources. The recycling rate was 37% in 2019.
Dublin City and Cork City both have public park areas of approximately 36m2 per person. Dublin city has more than 200 public parks of various size, distribution, and character within its administrative area. Cork City contains approximately 607 hectares of parks.
The overall number of persons recorded as victims of attempts/threats to murder, assaults, harassments, and related offences, during Q2 2021 was 552 higher (+12.9%) than in the corresponding period in 2020. The numbers of male victims and female victims were both higher (by 14% for males, and 11.7% for females) than a year earlier, and the largest changes were among persons aged under 18”.
The CSO, Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) and Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri-Ireland) established a project team in April 2017 to engage with a combined UN Statistics Division (UNSD)/Esri research exercise, with a goal to develop and deploy a new approach for monitoring the UN SDG Indicators, using geographic information systems. The result of this exercise is an SDG website (Ireland's SDGs Data Hub, https://irelandsdg.geohive.ie/), hosted on OSi's Geohive platform, which is Ireland’s Central Portal for all SDGs and contains indicators data on the 17 UN SDGs for Ireland. All the indicators in this publication will be loaded onto the Geohive.
The 17 UN SDGs are a set of global development targets adopted by the United Nations (UN) member countries in September 2015 to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. The UN SDGs are driving the global development agenda towards 2030 (Agenda 2030). They address global challenges including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. The CSO has a central role in the identification, management, and presentation of the data needed to meet the requirements of the UN SDG Indicators.
Reports currently published in the UN SDG series are:
‘Goal 1 No Poverty’; ‘Goal 2 Zero Hunger’; ‘Goal 3 Good Health and Well-Being’; ‘Goal 4 Quality Education’; ‘Goal 5 Gender Equality’; ‘Goal 6 Clean Water and Sanitation’; ‘Goal 7 Affordable and Clean Energy’; ‘Goal 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth’; ‘Goal 9 Industry Innovation and Infrastructure' and ‘Goal 10 Reduced Inequalities’.
