Go to release: Vehicles Licensed for the first time November 2020
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (09 December 2020) published Vehicle Licensing figures for November 2020. These figures are based on the National Vehicle and Driver File compiled by the Department of Transport.
Today’s publication shows that the number of new cars licensed for the first time in November 2020 was 1,468 compared to 1,676 in November 2019, a decrease of 12.4%. The monthly decrease follows two months of strong growth. The number of new cars licensed in the first 11 months of 2020 was 83,277 compared to 112,576 in 2019, a fall of 26.0% or 29,299 less cars.
Commenting on the data, Olive Loughnane, Statistician, said: ‘Today’s figures from the CSO show the continued growth in the number of electric and hybrid vehicles licensed in Ireland. Despite the drop of 26.0% in the overall number of new cars licensed from January to November 2020, the number of new hybrid and electric cars licensed in that period now exceeds the number licensed for all of 2019 by 14.5%. The number of new electric cars licensed from January to November 2020 grew by 16.4% from 3,313 to 3,855. There were 12,572 new hybrid cars licensed in the first eleven months of 2020, compared with 10,860 with the same period in 2019. Furthermore, the number of used (imported) diesel private cars licensed fell by 37.8% from 72,642 in the period January to November 2019 to 45,210 in the first 11 months of 2020’
Further commenting on the results, Olive Loughnane said: ‘The number of new cars licensed in November 2020 shows a decrease of 12.4% compared to November 2019. This follows year-on-year growth in the months of August 2020, September 2020 and October 2020. Data for the year to date, shows that the number of new cars licensed was 29,299 lower than in the same period of 2019, a drop of 26.0%. This fall is due to the very low numbers licensed during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis. The number of used cars licensed in November declined by 20.1% but decreases in the number of used cars licensed were evident prior to the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.'
