Press Statement Transport Omnibus 2018

In 2018, Irish licensed vehicles travelled a total of 47.5 billion kilometres and, on average, each private car travelled 16,990 kilometres
  • A total of 36.6 million passengers passed through Irish airports and 13,264 trading vessels arrived in Irish ports in 2018
  • In 2018, 142 people were killed on Irish roads. This represents a decrease of 14 fatalities when compared with 2017
  • Overall, there were 136,316 driving tests conducted in 2018 with an average pass rate of 52.5%
  • During 2018, a total of 177,092 penalty point endorsement notices were issued. There were 798 drivers with 12 penalty points on their licences on 31st December 2018

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (24 October 2019) published the Transport Omnibus 2018. The Omnibus presents a comprehensive picture of transport activity in Ireland, based on data published by the Central Statistics Office throughout the year as well as official statistics from other Governing bodies.

Commenting on the publication, Brendan Curtin, Statistician, said "the Transport Omnibus is an official source of transport related data in Ireland. The type of information includes: the number of wheelchair accessible taxis and hackneys licensed in the state in 2018 increased by 42.8% to 2,220 compared with 2017. 

A total of 226.7 million passengers were carried on scheduled bus services, 48.0 million passengers travelled by rail and 41.8 million passengers travelled on the Luas in 2018.

Irish registered goods vehicles made 13.4 million laden journeys in 2018 and transported a total of 150.0 million tonnes of freight."
