Number of Persons in Employment

  • There was an annual increase in employment of 3.0% or 57,100 in the year to the second quarter of 2015, bringing total employment to 1,958,700.
  • On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment increased by 19,000 (+1.0%) over the previous quarter. This follows on from a seasonally adjusted increase in employment of 15,200 (+0.8%) in Q1 2015.


Number of Persons Unemployed

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 10.0% to 9.6% over the quarter.
  • Unemployment decreased by 43,300 (-17.0%) in the year to Q2 2015 bringing the total number of persons unemployed to 211,200.
  • The long-term unemployment rate decreased from 6.8% to 5.5% over the year to Q2 2015. Longterm unemployment accounted for 56.1% of total unemployment in Q2 2015 compared with 57.6% a year earlier and 58.2% in the second quarter of 2013.


Labour Force

  • The total number of persons in the labour force in the second quarter of 2015 was 2,169,900, representing an increase of 13,800 (+0.6%) over the year. The number of persons not in the labour force in Q2 2015 was 1,437,200, a decrease of 600 (-0.0%) over the year.
