Number of Persons in Employment

 

  • There was an annual increase in employment of 3.3% or 61,000 in the year to the fourth quarter of 2013, bringing total employment to 1,909,800. 

 

  • On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment increased by 14,600 (+0.8%) in the quarter. This follows on from a seasonally adjusted increase in employment of 20,800 (+1.1%) in Q3 2013.

 

Number of Persons Unemployed

 

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 12.7% to 12.1% over the quarter.

 

  • Unemployment decreased by 41,400 (-14.1%) in the year to Q4 2013 bringing the total number of persons unemployed to 253,200.

 

  • The long-term unemployment rate decreased from 8.2% to 7.2% over the year to Q4 2013. Long-term unemployment accounted for 61.4% of total unemployment in Q4 2013 compared with 59.9% a year earlier and 62.5% in the fourth quarter of 2011.

 

Labour Force

 

  • The total number of persons in the labour force in the fourth quarter of 2013 was 2,163,100, representing an increase of 19,600 (+0.9%) over the year. The number of persons not in the labour force in Q4 2013 was 1,434,300, a decrease of 18,700 (-1.3%) over the year.
