Recidivism (re-offending) Statistics in the Probation Service 2007 is being published today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The report is a detailed study of recidivism among offenders placed under Probation Service supervision in 2007, and the factors that influence it. The statistics are produced from combining Probation Service and Garda Síochána administrative record.

 

Conclusions

 

  • Over 37% of offenders re-offend within a two-year period of being placed under Probation Service supervision.
  • Recidivism is higher for males (38.1%) than females (32.0%).
  • Recidivism rates decrease with age, from 53.6% of offenders in the under 18 age group to 29.5% of offenders in the 45-64 age group.
  • Those under probation supervision for Group 07 - Burglaries and Related Offences had a recidivism rate of 47.7%, while those under supervision for Group 03 Attempts/Threats to Murder, assaults, harassments and related offences had a recidivism rate of 30.6%.
