Births, Deaths and Marriages in Quarter 3 2009

 

The CSO today released the Vital Statistics Third Quarter 2009 report.


Some of the key points highlighted in the report are as follows:


Births

  • There were 19,289 births registered in the third quarter of 2009, the largest number of births registered in a quarter since quarter 2 1980, when 19,339 births were registered. The 19,289 births registered represented an increase of 1.6% on the quarter 3 figure of 2008.
  • Births in the third quarter of 2009 represented an annual birth rate of 17.3 per 1,000 population. The rate for the corresponding quarter of 2008 was 17.2 per 1,000 population and 14.7 per 1,000 population in quarter 3 2000. In quarter 3 2009, Fingal recorded the highest birth rate of 23.0 per 1,000 population, while County Monaghan recorded the lowest birth rate of 12.6 per 1,000 population.
  • Of the 19,289 births, there were 6,256 births registered as outside marriage. This accounted for 32.4% of all births.  Of these, 3,356 births were to unmarried parents with the same address, 17.4% of all births. The highest percentage of births outside marriage occurred in Cork city at 47%, while the lowest percentage occurred in County Leitrim at 20%.


Deaths

  • There were 6,638 deaths registered in quarter 3 2009, a decrease of 0.5% in the number of deaths registered in the third quarter of 2008. The quarter 3 2009 total represents a death rate of 6.0 per 1,000 population, the same as the corresponding quarter in 2008. The death rate in quarter 3 2000 was 7.2 per 1,000 population.
  • For those aged 65 and over, the annual death rate was 40.7 per 1,000 population (5,039 deaths). This compares with a rate of 42.4 per 1,000 population for the corresponding quarter of 2008, a decline of 4%. The decrease in this rate since 2000 was almost 20% (50.6 per 1,000 population).
  • There were 80 infant deaths registered in quarter 3 2009 giving an infant mortality rate of 4.1 deaths per 1,000 live births. The corresponding rate in quarter 3 2008 was 3.5 per 1,000 live births and was 6.4 per 1,000 live births in quarter 3 2000. The number of neonatal deaths (deaths of infants at ages under 4 weeks) in quarter 3 2009 was 53, 2.7 deaths per 1,000 live births.
  • Over one third (35%) of all deaths in the quarter were attributed to circulatory disease (2,303), while 30% were attributed to malignant neoplasms (1,991), 10% to respiratory diseases (682) and 7% to external causes (468).

Natural Increase

  • The natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) for quarter 3 2009 was 12,651. This represents a rate of 11.3 per 1,000 population, 0.2 above quarter 3 2008 and 3.8 above quarter 3 2000.


Marriages

  • There were 8,050 marriages registered in quarter 3 2009, 715 less than the corresponding quarter of 2008 and an increase of 457 from the number of marriages registered in quarter 3 2000.
