Building and Construction Inquiry 2008 (New)

Construction turnover exceeded €32 billion in 2008

The Central Statistics Office today for the first time publishes results from the new Building and Construction Inquiry.  These results are available on CSO’s Database Direct service, please see:

http://www.cso.ie/px/pxeirestat/database/eirestat/construction.asp

Main results from the survey are as follows:

  • Over 47,500 enterprises were engaged in Building and Construction in 2008
  • Turnover of these enterprises exceeded 32 bn in 2008
  • The number of persons engaged in these enterprises is just under 152,000
  • Over 96% of enterprises have fewer than 10 persons engaged

The new Building and Construction Inquiry is a sample survey covering all enterprises. It has wider coverage than the Census of Building and Construction which it replaces. It consists of a census of enterprises with 20 or more persons engaged (which was the scope of the previous Census of Building and Construction) and in addition a random sample of
the smaller units stratified by activity (NACE Revision 2) and employment size class.

From 2008, the business activity classification used in this survey is based on the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community, i.e. NACE Rev. 2. Previous to 2008, the industrial activity classification used was NACE Rev. 1.1. The new Building and Construction Inquiry also incorporates a reclassification of the construction sector in that further detail is being provided in relation to the construction of buildings, civil engineering and specialised construction activities.
