PRODCOM Product Sales 2008

Net Selling Value of Prodcom products totals €95,299 million in 2008

The Central Statistics Office today published results from the 2008 PRODCOM inquiry on its website at

http://www.cso.ie/px/pxeirestat/database/eirestat/Production%20Statistics/Production%20Statistics.asp

Prodcom is the European Union’s standard classification of production statistics. It contains almost 3,920 products, of which approximately 46% are produced and/or sold by Irish industrial enterprises. Its scope relates to the NACE activity codes from 07 to 33.

Change in classification

The business activity classifications used in this Statistical release are based on the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community i.e. NACE Rev. 2. Previous PRODCOM publications were based on the NACE Rev.1.1 classification.

The main change for the PRODCOM 2008 publication is the reclassification of local units in the Publishing sector (NACE 22 of NACE Rev 1.1) to the Services sector (i.e. outside the scope of this publication). Other changes mean that there are separate NACE groups for Food products (NACE 10), Beverages (NACE 11), Chemical and chemical products (NACE 20) and Basic pharmaceutical products and preparations (NACE 21).

Confidential totals are denoted on the file by the value -99,999,999.

Details of EU aggregates and individual member state data can be found on the Eurostat website at

http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/prodcom/introduction

Over half of Irish product sales are classified in the following four NACE classes

  • Manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and preparations
  • Manufacture of computer, electronic, optical and electrical equipment
  • Manufacture of food products
  • Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products

There is a direct link between this classification of products and the classification used in foreign trade statistics, the Combined Nomenclature. It is thus possible to combine production and trade data to derive related indicators such as consumption.
