The CSO constantly seeks to improve the accuracy of releases by benchmarking data against the most up-to-date information available. This is in line with standard procedures for reviewing and updating data and statistical releases.
The trade in goods data are provided by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners. The statistics are a combination of Customs-based non-EU trade statistics (Extrastat) and data from the Intrastat Survey of traders involved in trade with other EU member states. The CSO is responsible for processing and disseminating the data received from Revenue.
Final monthly trade figures are published nationally six months after the publication of each month’s preliminary figures. However, further revisions are possible in exceptional cases and asymmetries are the subject of ongoing examination. See CSO’s Revision Policy, here.
A large component of the monthly revisions received from Revenue come from the incorporation of late data received from traders which replace estimates for previous non-responses. In many cases, increases in trade volumes or value are explained by changes to supply chains, however, in some cases, traders may correct errors in previously reported value and volume data.
Revised data has been received from Revenue for Goods under CN 28182000 (Aluminium oxide excl. artificial corundum) and data has now been revised for the year 2025 and Quarter 1 (Q1) 2026.
Tables 1 & 2 give details of the changes to data from January 2025 to March 2026.
It is recognised internationally that the existence of a sound revisions policy maintains the credibility in official statistics. The CSO General Revisions Policy, which details how revisions should be managed and communicated to users, outlines the three main types of revisions:
The data revision policy that CSO statistics adheres to can be found via the following link: Treatment of Revisions.
All revisions are incorporated into the latest CSO release and PxStat tables and submitted to Eurostat each month.
