This publication is categorised as a CSO Frontier Series Output. Particular care must be taken when interpreting the statistics in this release as it may use new methods which are under development and/or data sources which may be incomplete, for example new administrative data sources.
The seasonally adjusted employee index increased by 8% in the year to June 2022. The female employee index increased by 8.7%, while the male index increased by 7.3% for the same period.
All age groups saw annual increases in the employee index. The highest increases were in those aged 15–19 years (+23.2%) and 65 years and over (+18.0%). All age groups saw monthly decreases in the employee index apart from persons aged 65 years and over (+1.0%).
The Accommodation & Food Services Activities sector saw an annual increase of 35.2% in June 2022. However, when compared with pre-pandemic levels in June 2019, the sector increased by 0.5%.
Data for two additional aggregated sectors are provided: Tourism Industries and Cultural & Creative Industries saw increases in their indices of 32.9% and 6.6% respectively in June 2022 when compared with June 2021.
The Monthly Estimates of Payroll Employees using Administrative Data release is a very short time series (three and a half years of monthly data) and is thus at the lower limit of acceptable length for the seasonal adjustment process. In the short term, care should be taken in interpreting the seasonally adjusted output. Users should be aware that there is increased uncertainty around the seasonally adjusted figures during the COVID-19 period due to the volatility of the data. March 2021 was the last month to show a negative annual change (-10.9%) for the employee index when compared to the previous year. The male and female indices have increased on an annual basis by 7.3% and 8.7% respectively. Both males (-0.4%) and females (-0.3%) decreased in June 2022 when compared with May 2022.
All age groups apart from those aged 65 years and over showed monthly decreases in the seasonally adjusted employee index in June 2022, with 15-19 years (-3.0%), 20-24 years (-0.9%), and 25-34 years (-0.7%) showing the largest decreases.
The seasonally adjusted employee index in the Information & Communication sector saw continuous monthly increases from December 2020 to June 2022, where it reached 119.1, up 6.6% from the previous year.
Accommodation & Food Services Activities sector had the largest decrease in the monthly index (-6.6%), while Education had the largest increase (+1.5%) in June 2022.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (11 August 2022) released Monthly Estimates of Payroll Employees using Administrative Data June 2022.
Commenting on the release, John Mullane, Statistician, said:

All NACE economic sectors increased on an annual basis apart from Agriculture, Forestry, & Fishing, which decreased by 0.4%. The Arts, Entertainment, Recreation & Other Service Activities sector saw an annual increase of 10.9% to June 2022. However, this sector decreased by 4.4% over the three years from June 2019 to June 2022.
The age group with the smallest increase when comparing June 2019 with June 2022 for the series was 25-34 years at 0.5%.
The highest annual increases were noted in the following age groups: 23.2% for 15-19 years, 12.3% for 20-24 years, and 18% for 65 years and over.”
