Household Saving

This chapter presents distributional information on household saving consistent with Institutional Sector Accounts.

Figure 3.1 shows the contribution of each quintile to the household savings rate over the period 2010 to 2015. The figure shows that apart from 2010, only the top 40% of households in the income distribution have positive savings.

Figure 3.2 shows the savings rate of each quintile over the period 2010 to 2015. For the period as a whole, only the top 40% of households in the income distribution have positive savings.

Figure 3.3 shows the contribution to the household savings rate by household type. Negative savings are driven by single households where either the inhabitant is 65 years and older or where there are children living at home.
