COVID-19 Vaccination Statistics Series 2

Over 95% of Local Electoral Areas (LEAs) have a COVID-19 booster vaccination rate of 60% or more

CSO statistical publication, , 11am

Key Findings

This publication is categorised as a CSO Frontier Series Output. Particular care must be taken when interpreting the statistics in this release. CSO Frontier Series may use new methods which are under development and/or data sources which may be incomplete, for example new administrative data sources. Publishing outputs under the Frontier Series allows the CSO to provide useful new information to users and get informed feedback on these new methods and outputs whilst at the same time making sure that that the limitations are well explained and understood. In using the increasingly varied sources of data available, the CSO must ensure that we continue to protect and secure data. Our aim is to ensure that citizens can live in an informed society while at the same time ensuring adherence to all relevant data protection legislation.

As well as the strict legal protections set out in the Statistics Act, 1993, and other existing regulations, we are committed to protecting individual privacy and all identifiable information from each of the data sources used in our analysis, such as name, date of birth and addresses, are removed before use and only anonymised statistical aggregates are produced. For further information on the data sources, linking procedures and definitions of this report, see Background Notes and Vaccination FAQ.

The uptake rates by grouping should be interpreted as estimates. For example, the number of persons who have received a vaccine only includes those who have been vaccinated in the State and would not include those who may have been vaccinated outside of the State. Further, the denominator may include those who are no longer resident in the State. As rates are estimates, this may lead to an underrepresentation of the vaccine uptake rates for a given grouping.

  • In 90% of LEAs, the COVID-19 vaccination uptake rate among the over 12s is greater than 83.9% of the population.

  • In 90% of LEAs, the COVID-19 vaccination uptake rate of 5- to 11-year-olds is less than 23.4% of the population.

  • COVID-19 booster vaccinations rates (from fully vaccinated population) in LEAs around the country range from 52% to 75%.

  • The LEA with the highest COVID-19 booster vaccination rate is Bantry, West Cork.

  • Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart is the LEA with the lowest COVID-19 booster vaccination rate.

  • Male employees aged 18-24 years have the lowest COVID-19 booster vaccine uptake rate at 45%.

  • Those working in Human Health & Social Work activities had the highest rates of COVID-19 booster vaccination rates at 82%, while those employed in Accommodation & Food Service activities had the lowest rate at 56%.

  • Among employees, the lowest COVID-19 booster vaccine uptake rate across all age groups is in the EU 14-27 nationality grouping.

Statistician's Comment

Commenting on the Bulletin, Steven Conroy, Statistician, said: “This COVID-19 Vaccination bulletin is based on vaccinations and boosters administered up to 04 March 2022. It is the fourth publication by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) providing insights into Ireland’s COVID-19 vaccination programme. This bulletin includes vaccine uptake analysis of both 5- to 11-year-olds and the population aged 12 and over shown by Local Electoral Area (LEA). Areas are split out into deciles to show their percentage of vaccination uptake. We also show two maps in this bulletin, the first is the COVID-19 vaccination rate decile by LEA, and the second is the booster rate by LEA (from fully vaccinated population). In 90% of LEAs, the COVID-19 vaccination uptake rate of 5- to 11-year-olds is less than 23.4%. In 90% of LEAs, the COVID-19 vaccination uptake rate among the over 12s is greater than 83.9% of the population.

Our analysis also shows that the COVID-19 booster vaccination rate (from fully vaccinated population) ranges across all LEAS in the country from 52% to 75%. The LEAs with the highest COVID-19 booster vaccination rates are Bantry, West Cork, Blackrock, Co Dublin, Belmullet, Co Mayo, Rathfarnham-Templeogue, and Stillorgan in Dublin. While the Dublin LEAs of Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart, Tallaght South, North Inner City, Ongar and Ballymun-Finglas are among the LEAs with the lowest COVID-19 booster vaccination rates in the country."

Commenting further on the Bulletin, Tim Linehan, Statistician, said: "The report also includes analysis using data from the Revenue PAYE Modernisation system (PMOD) to provide insight on employment status of records of vaccination from the HSE Vaccine Information System. This analysis found that the lowest COVID-19 booster vaccine uptake rate is in male employees aged 18-24 years old at 45%. Looking at employees by NACE economic sector, COVID-19 booster vaccination rates were highest at 82% in the Human Health & Social Work activities sector, while the lowest rates at 56% were in the Accommodation & Food Service activities sector. Among employees, the lowest COVID-19 booster vaccine uptake rate across all age groups is in the EU 14-27 grouping.”

Map 1 presents the COVID-19 vaccine uptake rates on 04 March 2022 by LEA. This is an update to previous analysis in COVID-19 Insight Bulletins: ICU and Hospital Admissions Series 1. The LEAs are grouped in deciles ranked from lowest to highest decile according to vaccine uptake rate. LEAs with lighter colours correspond with deciles with lower uptake rates while the darker areas correspond with LEA deciles with higher uptake rates. Users can hover their mouse over the map to see the name of the LEA and the associated decile. Users can also zoom in on the map to see some of the LEAs that are smaller in geographical area.

Map 1: COVID-19 Vaccination Rate Decile by Local Electoral Area as of 04 March 2022

Decile ranges are ranked lowest COVID-19 vaccine uptake rate to highest as follows:

1 - <83.9%

2 - 83.9% to 87.7%

3 - 87.7% to 89.8%

4 - 89.8% to 90.8%

5 - 90.8% to 91.9%

6 - 91.9% to 92.7%

7 - 92.7% to 93.6%

8 - 93.6% to 94.7%

9 - 94.7% to 95.8%

10 - >95.8%

Map 2 shows the COVID-19 booster vaccination rate (%) by LEA (from fully vaccinated population) as of 04 March 2022. The COVID-19 booster vaccination rate ranges from 52% to 75% in LEAs across the country.

Map 2: Booster Vaccination Rate (%) by Local Electoral Area (from fully vaccinated population) as of 04 March 2022
Table 1: Vaccination rate by Local Electoral Authority (LEA) for population (fully vaccinated) on 04 March 2022

Table 1 (above) shows the Vaccination uptake (%) decile ranges for 5-11 year old and 12 years and over population by LEA on 04 March 2022, as well as the booster rate (%) by LEA for the fully vaccinated population.

In this report, the CSO has used Revenue PAYE Modernisation system (PMOD) data to provide insight on employment status of records of vaccination from the HSE Vaccine Information System. Using pseudonymised identifiers more than 84% (2.28m) of employees aged over 18 on 01 January 2022 with a record of employment in the PMOD system in 2021 or 2022 were linked to a record of vaccination, at least one dose, in the HSE Vaccination Information System. Additional demographic information was derived by linking to the Department of Social Protection (DSP) Central Records System (CRS).

Figure 1 shows the age breakdown of employees by sex of booster vaccine uptake (from fully vaccinated population) as of 04 March 2022. We see the largest difference between male and female booster vaccine uptake in 18-24-year-olds. Booster vaccine uptake is highest in the 65 years and over age group at 94%.
