Census 2022 Characteristics
Note - Data within the Census 2022 series should be quoted as the official source of population statistics.
- Approximately 8% of property purchasers in 2022 who were matched to census data were living with their parents at the time of the census in 2022.
- This amounted to 11,260 people out of a total of 137,040 matched to Census 2022.
- Among these purchasers, 51% were male and 49% female.
- Approximately 85% of this group were aged 35 or under, with 15% aged 36 – 45.
- The median income among people who were recorded as living with parents in the census and who purchased property in 2022 was €42,800.
- Among purchasers matched to the census, 35% were enumerated in households that were renting with a further 33% in households that owned their home with a mortgage or loan.
- Approximately 27% were in households which owned their home outright, and 2% were in households living in their home rent free. The remaining 2% did not have a recorded nature of occupancy.
- In the general Census 2022 population, only 28% of households rented their accommodation.
- Over 85% of residential property purchasers who were matched to Census 2022 were employed, with only 2% unemployed,
- Among the 12% of purchasers who were recorded as not in the labour force, 6% were retired, 4% were looking after home or family, 1% were unable to work due to illness or disability, and less than 1% were students.
- Comparing these numbers to the general population in the census, 56% of people aged 15 and over were employed, with a further 5% unemployed.
- Outside the labour force, 16% of people were retired, 11% were students, 7% were looking after home or family, and 5% were unable to work due to illness or disability.

- Around 40% of the people who purchased residential property in 2022 and who were matched to the census were recorded as being in households composed of married couples with children on Census Night.
- A further 25% of purchasers were recorded in households made up of married (14%) and cohabiting couples (11%) without children.
- Around 6% of purchasers were living alone, while 3% of property purchasers were enumerated in households comprised of unrelated persons only.
- The most common occupational group among property purchasers in 2022 was business, media and public service professionals which made up nearly 11% of those who bought homes.
- This was closely followed by science, research, engineering and technology professionals at 10.5%, and business and public service associate professionals at 9.7%.
- The groups with the lowest proportions of purchasers in 2022 were skilled agricultural and related trades, health and social care associate professionals, and elementary trades and related occupations, all making up around 1% of purchasers.
- Looking at the country of citizenship of the residential property purchasers who were found in Census 2022 (total 135,570), 75.8% (102,780) were recorded as Irish.
- A further 10.6% (14,320) had citizenship elsewhere in the EU, with 6.7% (9,030) recording citizenship of an Asian country.
- Around 2.1% (2,790) of purchasers had U.K citizenship.
- Purchasers with American citizenship made up around 1.8% (2,430) of the total.
- Around 1% (1,410) of purchasers had African citizenship, and 0.8% (1,120) had citizenship in Europe excluding the EU.
