Median age of purchasers stood at 40 in 2024

The median age of purchasers stayed at 40 years between 2022 and 2024, across all transaction types.

Among sole purchasers, the median age fell from 43 to 42 in the same timeframe, whereas the median age for joint purchasers fell from 39 to 38. 

The median age by different types of purchaser in 2024 were:

  • 43 for sole purchaser with child/children.
  • 42 for sole purchaser without children.
  • 40 for joint purchasers with child/children.
  • 36 for joint purchasers without children.

Youngest purchasers found in the Greater Dublin Area

  • The lowest median age for purchasers in 2024 was in South Dublin, with a median age of 37.
  • The highest was in Kerry, with a median age of 45.
  • The LEA with the youngest purchasers in 2024 was Ballyfermot-Drimnagh, in Dublin City, with a median age of 35.
  • The LEA with the highest median age of 54 was Belmullet, in Mayo.

Almost a third of people who bought a dwelling in 2024 were aged 35 or under

Almost a third of people who bought a dwelling in 2024 were aged 35 or under. Around 11% of purchasers were aged 60 and over.
