Contribution Trends

Five years after starting, more than half of PRSA contributors did not make any contributions to their PRSA

The trend in contributions over time for PRSAs which started in 2019 is presented in Figure 3.1. Overall, 77.7% of contributors made a contribution in year 2 (2020), and 67.5% in year 3 (2021). In year 6 (2024) the rate had dropped to 47.5%.

Breaking this down by PRSA type: 83.7% of standard PRSA contributors made a contribution in year 2, compared with 61.3% of non-standard contributors. By year 6 the difference between PRSA types was smaller: 48.2% of standard PRSA contributors made a contribution, compared with 45.6% of non-standard contributors.

Contributions 2019 - 2023

Between 2019 and 2023 there is a noticeable difference between PRSA types in the proportion contributing to their PRSA in year 2.

The proportion of standard PRSA contributors that made a contribution in year 2 ranged between 83.7% and 87.6% (Figure 3.2).

For non-standard PRSA contributors the range was 61.3% to 80.4% over the same period (Figure 3.3).

Contributions by Age 2024

The age group with the highest proportion of those who made a contribution was the under 25 years category for both types of PRSA.

In all age-groups, non-standard PRSAs had a higher proportion that made a contribution than standard PRSAs in the same age-group.

Contributions by Sex 2024

In 2024, 39.3% of males with PRSAs made a contribution, compared with 42.4% of females with PRSAs.

For males with a standard PRSA, 36.3% made a contribution, compared with 39.3% of females.

The equivalent for non-standard PRSA contributors was 45.5% of males made a contribution, compared with 50.0% of females.

Contributions by Nationality 2024

Overall, the category with the highest proportion that made a contribution was All Nationalities Excluding EU and UK, at 43.3% of contributors. The lowest proportion that made a contribution was in the EU27 Countries (Excluding Ireland) category with 36.5%.
