Population Pyramid 2024

The population pyramid in Figure 2.1 is a snapshot of all PRSA contributors in 2024 and shows that the largest age group amongst all genders and PRSA types is 45 – 54 years old, and the smallest age group is those under 25.

Sex Distribution 2024

The proportion of female PRSA contributors rose slightly from 40.8% in 2019 to 42.0% in 2024 for all PRSAs. Comparing by PRSA type in 2024, 43.5% of contributors to standard PRSAs and 39.4% of contributors to non-standard PRSAs were female (Figure 2.2).

Total Assets Value by Sex 2019 - 2024

The total assets value of male contributors increased from €5.1bn in 2019 to €12.2bn in 2024. Breaking this down by type: standard PRSA assets value of males increased by €1.64bn while non-standard PRSA assets increased by €5.6bn. 

The total assets value of female contributors increased from €2.3bn in 2019 to €6.0bn in 2024. Breaking this down by type: standard PRSA assets value of females increased by €1.1bn, while non-standard PRSA assets increased by €2.7bn. 

In 2024 male contributors accounted for 67% of all PRSA assets while female contributors accounted for 33%.

Median Assets Value by Sex 2019 - 2024

For all PRSAs the median assets value was €21,008 for males and €15,780 for females in 2024. 

For standard PRSAs the median assets value was €18,198 for males and €14,647 for females in 2024. 

For non-standard PRSAs the median assets value was €28,172 for males and €18,891 for females in 2024.

PRSA Contributors by Age 2024

The largest age group by number of contributors in 2024 was the 45 - 54 years old category. In this age group there were 94,721 contributors, 60,958 of whom had standard PRSAs and 33,763 of whom had non-standard PRSAs.

New Contributors by Age 2019 - 2024

In 2024 the 25 to 64 year old age groups experienced larger increases in the number of new contributors than those under 25 or over 64 years old. Most of this increase was in non-standard PRSAs.

Total Assets Value by Age 2024

The age group with largest total PRSA assets value in 2024 was the 55 – 64-year-olds, accounting for €7.0bn, of which €2.2bn (32%) was in standard PRSAs and €4.8bn (68%) was in non-standard PRSAs. 

For new contributors, the group with the largest total PRSA assets value was also the 55 – 64-year-olds with some €1.6bn, of which €1.4bn (88%) was in non-standard PRSA assets.

Median Assets Value by Age 2024

The largest median assets value for all PRSA contributors in 2024 was in the 65 years and over age group and was €43,082 for all PRSA types, €29,688 for standard PRSAs and €80,538 for non-standard PRSAs.

PRSA Contributors by Nationality and Year

Ireland was the largest nationality category, at 202,640 (80%), of which there were 126,966 standard PRSA contributors and 75,674 non-standard contributors. The distribution of new contributors to PRSAs was similar, with Ireland making up 30,282, or 78% of new contributors to all PRSA types.

PRSA Assets Value by Nationality and Year

Ireland was the category with the largest PRSA assets value in 2024, accounting for €14.2bn (79%) of the total assets value. Some €9.0bn of this was in non-standard PRSAs.

Median Assets Value by Nationality and Year

In 2024 the category All Nationalities Excluding EU and UK had the highest overall median assets value of €26,931 for all PRSAs, €22,204 for standard PRSAs and €39,831 for non-standard PRSAs.
