The Balance of Payments current account was €1,196m in surplus in the first quarter of 2013. This compares with a current account deficit of €705m for the corresponding quarter of 2012. A merchandise surplus of €7,458m was partially offset by an invisibles deficit of €6,262m in the most recent quarter.
Between the first quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013 the merchandise surplus declined by €943m, while the invisibles deficit decreased by €2,843m. This latter decrease was mainly due to the income deficit declining by €2,346m (see Table 1).
Total service exports at €21,606m increased by €563m between Q1 2012 and Q1 2013. An increase in the exports of computer services (+€995m) was offset by declines in exports of trade related services (-€244m) and royalties/licences (-€141m). Total service imports at €20,852m were unchanged between Q1 2012 and Q1 2013 - an increase of €869m in imports of royalties/licences was offset by decreases in imports of miscellaneous business services (-€512m), insurance services (-€151m) and financial services (-€125m) (see Table 2a).
The direct investment income abroad of Irish-resident businesses was unchanged between Q1 2012 and Q1 2013. In the same period outflows of direct investment income from foreign-owned enterprises in Ireland fell by €1,993m (see Table 2a).
In the financial account, direct investment in Ireland increased by €16.7bn in the first quarter of 2013 while direct investment abroad increased by€9.9bn. Portfolio investment in foreign assets increased by €56.9bn while foreign portfolio investors invested €36.7bn during Q1 2013. Other investment assets decreased by €1.6bn and corresponding liabilities increased by €8.7bn for the same period (see Table 2b).
Revised results for 2011 and 2012
New and updated information for 2011 and 2012 have led to revisions to the current account for those years. The revised results are included in the 2012 National Income and Expenditure Release published today. The financial accounts results for 2011 and 2012 have also been amended to reflect new and revised data.

The balance of payments (BOP) is a statistical statement that summarises, for a specific time period, the economic transactions of the residents of an economy with the rest of the world.
The balance of payments presentation consists of three tables or accounts, the Current Account, the Capital Account and the Financial Account. The current account consists of trade in merchandise and services, income inflows and outflows and current transfers. The capital account covers capital transfers and the acquisition and disposal of non-produced, non-financial assets. The financial account is concerned with transactions in foreign financial assets and liabilities, distinguishing the functional type of investment i.e. direct, portfolio and other investment (including transactions in financial derivatives) and reserve assets.
BOP transactions, in principle, should be recorded on an accruals basis using market valuation. In practice, the collection system (see below) is designed to adhere to this approach and, for the most part, the valuations reported are either market values or a close approximation.
