Wholesale electricity prices fell by almost 30% in the 12 months to April 2024

Key Findings

Wholesale electricity prices rose by 2.1% in the month to April 2024 but were 29.5% lower than April 2023 and down 59.4% since April 2022.
Domestic producer prices for manufactured goods were on average 2.2% lower in April 2024 when compared with a year earlier, while producer prices for exported goods were up by 4.2%. Overall, manufacturing producer prices were 3.8% higher in the year.
Producer prices for food products dropped by 6.6% in the 12 months to April 2024, while the Food Products, Beverages & Tobacco Index was down by 5.7%.
Some of the most notable changes in producer prices for food products over the 12 months to April 2024 were: Fish & Fish Products (+6.9%), Dairy Products (-22.1%), Other Food Products (-6.8%), and Grain Milling, Starches & Animal Feeds (-5.7%).
The most notable changes in other producer prices in the year to April 2024 were: Chemicals & Chemical Products (+23.0%), Beverages (+9.0%), and Wood & Wood Products (-9.3%).
Wholesale prices for construction products were up by 0.4% in the month to April 2024 but were down by 1.4% in the 12 months since April 2023.

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (22 May 2024) released the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for April 2024.

Commenting on the release, Deirdre Toher, Statistician in the Prices Division, said:

“Wholesale price inflation showed an increase in April 2024 with a rise of 0.8% in the overall Producer Price Index for manufacturing industries in the month. The price index for export sales was also up by 0.8% since March 2024, while the index for home sales was unchanged in the month. Producer prices for products sold on the domestic market were 2.2% lower in April 2024 compared with April 2023. In the year, export producer prices rose by 4.2% while overall producer prices were up by 3.8%.

Electricity Prices

Wholesale electricity prices were up by 2.1% in April 2024 when compared to March 2024, but fell by 29.5% since April 2023. They are down 59.4% since April 2022 and have fallen 77.2% when compared to the peak that occurred during August 2022.

Food Products

Producer prices for food products rose by 0.5% in the month but dropped by 6.6% in the 12 months to April 2024.

Producer prices for Dairy Products dropped by 0.4% in the month to April 2024 and dropped by 22.1% since April 2023. Several other food categories showed notable changes in April 2024 when compared with the same month in 2023, including Other Food Products (-6.8%), Grain Milling, Starches & Animal Feeds (-5.7%), and Fish & Fish Products (+6.9%) (See Table 2).

Construction Materials

The All Materials Index for construction products rose by 0.4% in April 2024 but fell by 1.4% in the year since April 2023, while the Building & Construction Index (i.e. Materials and Wages) was up by 0.3% in the month and was 0.1% higher than the same month last year (See Tables 3 and 4)."

Wholesale prices for construction products decreased by 1.4% over the 12 months to April 2024

Notable annual increases and decreases in construction products as shown in Table 3 include:

Rough Timber (Hardwood): 8.1%
Cement: 6.2%
Other Steel Products: 5.1%
Other Treated Timber: -31.6%
Reinforcing Metal: -21.5%
Bituminous Emulsions: -13.5%

The Building & Construction Index (i.e. Materials and Wages) increased by 0.3% in the month to April 2024 and rose by 0.1% in the 12 months to April 2024. This index combines the All Materials Index with a measure of the change in wages in the Construction sector to provide an overall index for input construction costs (See Table 4).

Wholesale electricity prices decreased by 29.5% annually

There was an increase in the price of wholesale electricity in April 2024 with prices 2.1% higher than the previous month. The price of electricity was 29.5% lower than in April 2023 and 59.4% lower than in April 2022.

The price index for all energy fuels was up by 2.8% in April 2024, and by 10.0% in the year since April 2023 .

The overall Energy Products Index was up by 2.3% since March 2024 but fell by 21.3% when compared with April 2023 (See Figure 3 and Table 5).
