Wood and Paper Exports and Imports 2021

Imports of wood and paper products were €2 billion in 2021

Key Findings

Exports of wood and paper products were valued at €1 billion in 2021 compared with a value of €2 billion for imports of wood and paper products in 2021.
Exports of Veneer sheets and Wood-based panels were valued at €343 million in 2021 which represented 33% of the total value of exports of wood and paper products. Exports of Coniferous sawnwood at €230 million accounted for a further 22% in 2021 while exports of Secondary paper products in 2021 were €193 million or 19%.
Imports of Secondary paper products were valued at €647 million in 2021 which represented 32% of the total value of imports in 2021. Secondary wood products accounted for a further 30% or €608 million.
Exports of coniferous sawnwood increased by 212% from 212 thousand cubic metres in 1995 to 662 thousand cubic metres in 2021.
Exports of coniferous industrial roundwood increased by 109% from 207 thousand cubic metres in 1995 to 432 thousand cubic metres in 2021.

Statistician's Comment

Niamh Shanahan, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division of the CSO, noted that: "Over the period 1995 to 2021, there has been a substantial shift from exporting forest log towards processing the log removals from forests into products such as sawnwood, veneer sheets, wood-based panels before exporting them.

In recent years, export volumes of Coniferous industrial roundwood, Coniferous sawnwood, Veneer sheets and Wood-based panels, and Recovered paper have exceeded imports of these products.

In contrast import volumes of Wood fuel, Pulp, Paper and paperboard, Secondary wood products and Secondary paper products have exceeded export volumes. "
