The total number of new private cars licensed in June 2025 rose by 50% in comparison with June 2024 (5,259 vs 3,499).
The number of used (imported) cars licensed increased by 4% (5,448 vs 5,228) over the same period.
The number of new electric vehicles (EVs) licensed in June 2025 rose by 38% when compared with June 2024 (1,225 vs 886). This means the share of EVs among new private cars from January to June 2025 was 17% compared with 14% in the same period of 2024.
The number of new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) licensed in June 2025 grew by 110% when compared with June 2024 (609 vs 290). This has increased the year-to-date share of PHEVs among new private cars from 9% to 15% in the same period of 2024.
The combined share of petrol and diesel cars among new private cars licensed from January to June 2025 has fallen in comparison with 2024 (44% vs 56%).
Volkswagen was the most popular make of new private car licensed in June 2025.
Registration and licensing figures may differ in a given month for a number of reasons, some of which are outlined below:
Figure 1 shows data on the number of new and used (imported) private cars licensed for the first time in June 2021 to June 2025.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (11 July 2025) published Vehicles Licensed for the First Time for June 2025.
Commenting on the data, Damien Lenihan, Statistician in the Transport Section of the CSO, said: “Today’s figures from the CSO show a 38% increase in the number of electric cars licensed for the first time in June 2025 (1,225) when compared with the same month in 2024 (886). We also saw growth in the licensing of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) which were up 110% from 290 in June 2024 to 609 vehicles in June 2025.
In the first six months of 2025, there was a rise of 27% in new private electric cars licensed when compared with the same period in 2024 (13,102 vs 10,344). There were 21,424 new petrol cars licensed compared with 25,137 in the same period of 2024, a fall of 15%. Comparing the first six months of 2025 with 2024, the number of new diesel cars licensed decreased by 23% (13,439 vs 17,477).
The total number of used private cars licensed in June 2025 rose by 4% compared with the same period in 2024 (5,448 vs 5,228). There were 1,285 used (imported) diesel private cars licensed in June 2025, compared with 1,406 in the same period of 2024, a fall of 9%. Used (imported) private petrol cars licensed decreased by 1% in June 2025 compared with June 2024 (2,358 vs 2,375).
Data also shows that Volkswagen was the most popular make of new private car licensed in June 2025 at 833 vehicles, followed by Škoda (679), Hyundai (502), Tesla (433), and Toyota (370). Together, these five makes represented 54% of all new private cars licensed in June 2025 (See Table 4).
The most popular brand of new electric car licensed in June 2025 was Tesla Model 3 (253), followed by Tesla Model Y (180), and Hyundai Inster (116) (See TEM28 for further information).”
