Public Transport usage in August continued to exceed pre-pandemic numbers

Fuel Excise Clearances

At 85 million litres, clearances of petrol in July 2023, were 6% higher than in July 2022.

At 297 million litres, clearances of autodiesel in July 2023, were 0.3% higher than in July 2022 and 5% lower than in July 2021.

Statistics on the volume of fuel clearances covered by excise taxes are collected by the Revenue Commissioners. Clearances reflect the excise duties paid on oil removed from tax warehouses. This data provides a proxy for sales and the associated level of consumption, but they do not reflect actual consumption.

Vehicles Licensed

There were 11,328 new private cars and 4,559 used (imported) private cars licensed in August 2023. Compared with August 2022, this was an increase of 27% for new private cars while the number of  used private cars were up by 4%.

Road Fatalities

There were 26 fatalities on Irish roads in August 2023 compared with 12 in August 2022 and 21 in August 2021.
