Rail public transport journeys have returned to pre-pandemic levels

Fuel Excise Clearances

Clearances of autodiesel in August 2022, at 303 million litres, were 2% higher than in August 2021 and 7% higher than in August 2020.

Clearances of petrol in August 2022, at 82 million litres, were 4% higher than in August 2021 but 9% lower than August 2019.

Statistics on the volume of fuel clearances covered by excise taxes are collected by the Revenue Commissioners. Clearances reflect the excise duties paid on oil removed from tax warehouses. This data provides a proxy for sales and the associated level of consumption, but they do not reflect actual consumption.

Vehicles Licensed

There were 7,315 new private cars and 4,378 used (imported) private cars licensed in September 2022. Compared with September 2021, this was an increase of 15% for new private cars and a fall of 13% for used private cars.

Road Fatalities

There were 8 fatalities on Irish roads in September 2022 compared with 11 in the same month in 2021, 18 in 2020 and 18 in 2019.
