Fuel excise clearances

The Revenue Commissioners collect statistics on the volumes of fuel clearances covered by excise taxes. Clearances reflect the excise duties paid on oil removed from tax warehouses. Clearances data provide a proxy for sales and the associated level of consumption but do not reflect actual consumption per se. 

Clearances of autodiesel in August 2021 were 3.5% lower than in August 2019. Clearances of autodiesel were also 5.0% higher than the level in August 2020.

There was an increase of 3% for clearances of petrol in August 2021 compared with the levels in August 2020. August 2021 petrol clearance volumes were nearly 13% below August 2019. See table 2.1 and figure 2.1.

In September 2021, 6,354 new private cars were licensed in Ireland, compared with 5,747 in September 2020, an increase of 10.6%. This compares with 4,104 new private cars licensed in September 2019. 

In addition, the number of used (imported) private cars licensed fell from 9,300 in September 2020 to 5,056 in September 2021. This compares with 9,868 used (imported) private cars licensed in September 2019. See table 2.2 and figure 2.2.

Road Fatalities

There were 107 fatalities on Irish roads in the first nine months of 2021 compared with 114 in the same period in 2020, a decrease of 6.1%. In September 2021, there were 11 fatalities on Irish roads compared with 18 in September 2020. See table 2.3.
