Fuel excise clearances

The Revenue Commissioners collect statistics on the volumes of fuel clearances covered by excise taxes. Clearances reflect the excise duties paid on oil removed from tax warehouses. Clearances data provide a proxy for sales and the associated level of consumption but do not reflect actual consumption per se. 

Clearances of autodiesel in October 2021 were 20% higher than in October 2020 and 4% higher than in October 2019.

There was an increase of 35% for clearances of petrol in October 2021 compared with the level in October 2020. October 2021 petrol clearance volumes were 4% below October 2019. See table 2.1 and figure 2.1.

In November 2021, 2,167 new private cars were licensed in Ireland, compared with 1,468 in November 2020, an increase of 47.6%. This compares with 1,676 new private cars licensed in November 2019.

In addition, the number of used (imported) private cars licensed fell from 7,892 in November 2020 to 4,324 in November 2021. This compares with 9,874 used (imported) private cars licensed in November 2019. See table 2.2 and figure 2.2.

Road Fatalities

There were 119 fatalities on Irish roads in the first 11 months of 2021 compared with 138 in the same period in 2020, a decrease of 13.8%. In November 2021, there were 4 fatalities on Irish roads compared with 11 in November 2020. See table 2.3.
