This chapter contains statistics on births, deaths, marriages, civil partnerships and Babies' names which are compiled by the Central Statistics Office on behalf of the Minister for social protection.

There were 68,930 live births registered in 2013, a decrease of 3,295 on 2012. Births outside marriage/civil partnership also decreased from 25,344 in 2012 to 24,393 in 2013.

There were 30,018 deaths registered in 2013, the highest annual figure since 2001 when 30,212 deaths occurred.  The 2013 death rate was 6.5 per 1,000 population, up 0.2 from 2012.  Diseases of the heart and arteries remains the most common cause of death followed by malignant cancers.

The latest detailed data available for marriages is for the year 2013.  In 2013 there were 20,680 marriages registered.  The most common form of ceremony was Roman Catholic (12,921) followed by Civil Marriages (6,096).  The average ages of both the bride and the groom continued to rise in 2013.

1.4 Civil Partnerships registered in 2013 classified by future area of residence of partners

There were 338 civil partnership ceremonies in 2013, 208 male unions and 130 female unions. Almost 74% (249) of these same-sex couples reside in the Leinster area with 139 same-sex partnerships (41%) living in Dublin City and a further 22% residing in the greater Dublin area.

Excluding the Dublin area, Cork County had the highest number of civil partnerships registered in 2013 (18) and accounted for over 5% of all civil partnerships registered in that year.  In contrast, Cavan, Leitrim, Longford, Monaghan, Offaly, Sligo or South Tipperary had no civil partnerships registered in 2013.

The top five boys' names have made up the top 5 since 2007 with Jack being the most popular boys' name in each year since 2007.  For the girls there has been more variation in that time with the 3 most popular names (Emily, Emma and Sophie) unchanged except in their order since 2010.  Emily has been the most popular girls' name since 2011.
