This chapter shows the use of different types of social media by enterprises with 10 or more persons employed in Ireland in 2015. It also provides information on enterprise purchase of cloud computing services and how the purchase of cloud computing services by Irish Enterprises is above the EU average.

In 2015, 64% of Irish enterprises employing 10 or more people used some type of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube compared with an EU-28 average of 39%. In terms of enterprises using social media, Ireland ranked second in the EU-28. Malta had the largest percentage at 72%, 54% of enterprises in the United Kingdom used social media, while Poland had the lowest usage at 22%.

The primary method of using social media as a way of connecting with customers is the use of social networks. 62% of Irish enterprises in 2015 stating they used social networks such as Facebook, compared with 58% in 2014. Comparable data from Eurostat shows that the use of social networks by EU-28 enterprises increased from 33% in 2014 to 36% in 2015. The EU-28 figures for 2014 excluded Belgium, Czech Republic and France as this question was optional in 2014. Irish enterprises increased their usage of blogs or microblogs such as Twitter with 30% of enterprises using this method in 2015 compared with 27% in 2014. The use of multimedia content sharing websites such as YouTube increased from 19% of enterprises in 2014 to 21% in 2015.

In 2015, 35% of Irish enterprises employing 10 or more persons purchased cloud computing services compared to 28% in 2014. The most popular cloud computing service purchased by Irish enterprises in 2015 was the storage of files at 25%, while 23% of Irish enterprises purchased e-mail services.
