  • The information and communication sector (J) was the largest export sector exporting €59bn (44%) of total service exports.   
  • The financial and insurance sector (K) was the second largest export sector with €25bn (19%) of total service exports.  
  • The manufacturing sector (C) and administration and support sector (N) also contributed significantly exporting €24bn (18%) and €18bn (13%) of total service exports respectively.     
  • The manufacturing sector (C) represented the largest import sector with €98bn (49%) of total service imports.
  • The information and communications sector (J) formed the second largest activity sector with €53bn (27%).  
  • The financial and insurance sector (K) was also significant importing €22bn (11%) of total service imports. See Table 4.1, Figure 4.1 and Figure 4.2.

Large enterprises made up €72bn (53%) of total service exports (€135bn) in 2016. They dominated the information and communication sector (J) and provided a sizeable €57bn (42%) of total exports. Large enterprises in the manufacturing sector (C) exported €7bn (5%) of total services while large enterprises in the financial & insurance sector (K) and in other activity sectors exported €2bn and €6bn (1% and 5%) respectively of total services.  

SME enterprises in the financial and insurance sector (K) exported €20bn (15%) of total services while SME enterprises in the administrative and support sector (N) made up €11bn (8%). Of the total service exports, €3bn (2%) were provided by SME’s in other activity sectors. See Figure 4.3 and Table 4.2.

Large enterprises imported €148bn (74%) of total services (€199bn) in 2016. In the manufacturing sector (C) and the information and communication sector (J) they imported €83bn and €51bn (42% and 25%) respectively, together importing €133bn (67%) of total services.  

SMEs imported just €27bn (14%) of total services and in the financial and insurance sector (K) and in other activity sectors they made up €18bn (9%) and €6bn ( 3%) of total service imports respectively.  See Figure 4.4 and Table 4.3.
