Gross Value Added (GVA), which represents the value of goods and services produced in the economy, was €275.8 billion in 2020, an annual increase of 10.1%. Total Turnover in the Structural Business Economy increased by 1.0% to €816.0 billion between 2019 and 2020.

The number of persons engaged dropped by 6.7% in 2020 to 1,598,643 persons, a decrease of 114,614 persons when compared with 2019 levels. The number of enterprises in the Structural Business Economy increased by 2.1% to 291,489 in 2020, compared with 285,466 enterprises in 2019.

The Industrial sector had 19,171 enterprises (6.6% of all enterprises) and 260,660 persons engaged (16.3%) in the total Structural Business Economy in 2020. However, this sector accounted for a larger share of total Turnover (36.7%) and the largest share of total GVA at 46.6%.

The Services sector had the largest number of enterprises at 162,862 (55.9%) and persons engaged at 807,781 (50.5%) in the Structural Business Economy in 2020. This sector also accounted for the largest share of total Turnover (37.3%) and for 40.7% of total GVA.

The Distribution sector had 46,792 enterprises (16.1%) and 372,853 persons engaged (23.3%) in the Structural Business Economy in 2020. This sector accounted for 22.5% of total Turnover and 9.8% of total GVA.

The Building & Construction sector accounted for more than one-fifth (21.5%) of enterprises and almost one-tenth (9.8%) of persons engaged in the Structural Business Economy in 2020. However, this sector had the lowest share of both Turnover (3.6%) and GVA (2.9%).
