Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (13 January 2026) published the Supply and Use for Ireland 2022.
Commenting on the release, Becky Mangan, Statistician in the National Accounts Division, said: “At a high level in the Supply Table, we saw a total of €1.5 trillion worth of products supplied in the Irish economy in 2022. Of this, €1 trillion was domestic production, €505 billion was imported, and the rest was made up of taxes and subsidies.
Percentage of Domestic Production and Imports
The percentage shares of domestic production and imports varied widely across product categories.
For example, €14 billion (82%) of Agriculture Products were domestically produced in 2022, and €2 billion (11%) were imported. Conversely, €7 billion (79%) of Mining, Quarrying & Extraction products were imported, while €1 billion (15%) were domestically produced. Domestic production was heavily concentrated in the foreign-owned Multinational Enterprise (MNE) dominated sectors, manufacture of Pharmaceutical, Computer & Electronic Products, as well as Information & Communication Services. Together these products accounted for €444 billion (44%) of total domestic supply.
Exports and Consumption
Exports made up the largest share of total uses in the Irish economy in 2022, at €721 billion, but again, there were large variations depending on the product category. Most products from foreign-owned MNE dominated sectors were exported. For example, Pharmaceutical, Computer & Electronic Products were largely exported and worth €228 billion (84%) of total supply. Information & Communication Services were also largely exported, worth €224 billion (85%) of total supply.
However, just €2 billion (11%) of Agriculture Products were exported. The rest were consumed either for further production within the economy or by households and the government.
There were other products that were used almost entirely by other industries for further production. An example of this was Advertising & Market Research Services, where €10 billion (99%) of the total supply was consumed by other industries.
Then there were products which were almost entirely consumed by final users, households, the government, and Non-Profit Institutions Serving Households (NPISH). Together these sectors consumed €183 billion (12%) worth of all goods and services, and this consumption was largely concentrated in Human Health Services, worth €22 billion (96%) of total use, and Real Estate Activities, worth €27 billion (81%) of total use.”
