Excluding Motor Trades, the monthly volume of Retail Sales was up by 0.2% in July 2024 and rose by 0.2% in the year when compared with July 2023.
The value of Retail Sales rose by 0.2% in the month and rose by 1.2% in the 12 months to July 2024.
The largest monthly volume increases were recorded in Clothing, Footwear & Textiles (+4.8%), Pharmaceuticals, Medical & Cosmetic Articles (+2.2%), Furniture & Lighting (+2.1%), and Motor Trades (+2.0%).
Sectors showing the highest monthly volume decreases were Bars (-13.5%), Books, Newspapers & Stationery (-5.1%), and Electrical Goods (-2.4%).
The largest annual volume growth in July 2024 was in Hardware, Paints & Glass (+11.1%), Department Stores (+3.0%), and Other Retail Sales (+1.8%).
Sectors showing the highest annual volume declines in July 2024 were Bars (-16.2%), Books, Newspapers & Stationery (-4.4%), Electrical Goods (-3.3%), and Fuel (-2.4%).
The proportion of Retail Sales transacted online (from Irish registered companies) was 4.7% in July 2024 compared with 4.9% in June 2024 and 4.8% in July 2023.
This Retail Sales Index (RSI) has been compiled with reference to base year 2021=100 as per Eurostat Regulation. The new series has been calculated using updated weights from the Annual Services Inquiry 2021. The product profile and daily weights have also been updated using data from the Trading Day and Product Profile Survey 2022. The July 2024 (Provisional) period covers the four weeks from 07/07/24 to 03/08/24, while the June 2024 (Final) period covers the five weeks from 02/06/24 to 06/07/24.
The headline table shows the seasonally adjusted value and volume indices for the Retail Sales Index. It also highlights the monthly and annual percentage changes in both value and volume. Value represents turnover or total expenditure whereas volume strips out the impact of price changes to reflect quantity sold.

The proportion of Retail Sales transacted online (from Irish registered companies) was 4.7% in July 2024 and 4.9% in June 2024, compared with 4.8% in July 2023. Excluding Motor Trades, the proportion of Retail Sales transacted online was 6.2% in July 2024 and 6.4% in June 2024, compared with 6.3% in July 2023.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (30 August 2024) released Retail Sales Index July 2024 (Provisional) and June 2024 (Final).
Commenting on the release, Stephanie Kelleher, Statistician in the Enterprise Statistics Division, said: "The volume of Retail Sales rose by 0.1% in July 2024 when compared with June 2024 on a seasonally adjusted basis. On an annual basis, retail volumes were 0.4% higher than in July 2023. When Motor Trades are excluded, the volume of Retail Sales increased by 0.2% in the month and rose by 0.2% in the year when compared with July 2023 (See Headline Table, Tables 1 & 2, and Figure 1).
