This chapter explores the variation in both reported crime incidence and detection rates across different Garda administrative regions in 2020. The recorded crime rate is the number of recorded crime incidents relative to the population, expressed as a rate per 100,000 people. Figures are based on 2020 population estimates for each region. The crime incident detection rate is the number of detected incidents divided by the number of recorded incidents.
The recorded crime rate for Group 01 (Homicide) in Ireland in 2020 was 1.6 incidents per 100,000 people. The rate for homicides in 2020 was higher in the Dublin Metropolitan Region (1.8 per 100,000 people) than in other regions (1.7 per 100,000 people in the North Western Region, 1.2 per 100,000 people in the Eastern Region, 1.6 per 100,000 people in the Southern Region). See Table 4.1
