Lifting of Under Reservation Categorisation

Following the publication of the fifth Review of the Quality of Crime Statistics in October 2023, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has lifted the 'Under Reservation' categorisation around Recorded Crime Statistics. This is possible because An Garda Síochána have introduced a range of quality measures over the last number of years which have resulted in sustained improvement in the quality of the underlying crime data. These changes give a level of assurance to users that they can rely on Recorded Crime Statistics.

For further information see our Lifting of Under Reservation categorisation for Recorded Crime Statistics FAQ page.

The number of recorded crime incidents increased across all regions for five out of the fourteen offence groups in the year to Q1 2024. The most significant of these were as follows:

  • Robbery, Extortion & Hijacking offences had the largest rates of increase for the Eastern (+24%) and Southern regions (+21%), followed by an increase of 16% for each of the Dublin Metropolitan and North Western regions.
  • Theft & Related offences had the largest rates of increase in the North Western (+18%) and Eastern (+15%) regions while the lowest was in the Dublin Metropolitan region at 5%.
  • Fraud, Deception & Related offences had the largest rates of increase in the Eastern (+21%) and North Western (+15%) regions. The lowest rate of increase was in the Dublin Metropolitan region at 2%. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

By contrast, the number of recorded crime incidents for a further two offence groups fell across all regions during the same period.

  • Sexual offences – The largest rate of decrease was in the Dublin Metropolitan region (-16%) and this was followed closely by the Eastern (-14%) and Southern (-13%) regions. The lowest rate of decrease was in the North Western region at 3%.
  • Offences against Government, Justice Procedures & Organisation of Crime; The largest rate of decrease was in the Southern region (-21%) and the lowest was in the North Western region (-9%).

For all other offence groups, the experience across Garda regions was mixed. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

An Garda Síochána are currently in the process of the rolling out of a new Operation Model. This will involve a fundamental change to the organisational structure from the existing District Based Model to a new Divisional Functional Area Model. Further updates will follow in due course.
