The total number of pigs in Ireland in June 2022 was estimated at 1,634,800, a decrease of 3.5% compared with June 2021.
There were 1,497,600 non-breeding pigs and 137,200 breeding pigs.
When comparing June 2021 and June 2022 breeding figures, we can see the number of sows in pig decreased by 11.1%, while gilts (young female sows) in pig fell by 10.9%.
Figure 1 shows a comparison of the numbers of non-breeding pigs by weight between 2021 and 2022.
Table 1 shows the percentage change from the previous year of the main pig categories.
Table 2 displays the numbers of pigs by category over the past three years.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (15 September 2022) released the Pig Survey June 2022.
Commenting on the release, Dr Grzegorz Głaczyński, Statistician, said: “The number of breeding pigs fell by 14,700 (-9.7%) in June 2022 to 137,200 when compared with the same period last year. The figures also show a decrease in the number of non-breeding pigs by 44,800 (-2.9%) to 1,497,600 head."
