The volume of production in construction decreased by 4.5% in Quarter 2 2022 compared with Quarter 1 2022 on a seasonally adjusted basis.
On an annual basis, there was a 3.2% increase in volume recorded.
The largest reduction occurred in the Non-Residential Building sector with a decrease of 6.7% in the seasonally adjusted volume index between Quarter 1 2022 and Quarter 2 2022.
The Residential Building sector reduced its volume of output by 2.9% on a seasonally adjusted basis between Quarter 1 2022 and Quarter 2 2022.
The Civil Engineering sector declined by 0.9% in the seasonally adjusted volume index between Quarter 1 2022 and Quarter 2 2022.
The seasonally adjusted value index for All Building and Construction increased by 3.0% on a quarterly basis and grew by 12.6% on an annual basis.
The headline table shows the seasonally adjusted volume and value indices for production in building and construction for Q2 2022, Q1 2022 and Q2 2021. It should be noted that the deflator (i.e., the Capital Goods price index) used in the calculation of the Production in Building and Construction Index has increased in recent months. Figure 1 shows the seasonally adjusted volume indices for All Building & Construction, Residential Building and Civil Engineering from Q2 2017 to the current quarter. All sectors showed a decrease in seasonally adjusted volume in Q2 2022.
Figure 2 shows the seasonally adjusted volume indices for Q2 2019, Q2 2020, Q2 2021 and Q2 2022. Due to pandemic-related restrictions on non-essential construction activity in Q2 2020, immediate falls in output were recorded. Activity in the construction sector remains below pre-pandemic levels with production volume decreasing by 9.8% between Quarter 2 2019 and Quarter 2 2022.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (07 September 2022) released the Production in Building and Construction Index Quarter 2 2022 (Provisional) Quarter 1 (Final).
Commenting on the release, Shane O’Sullivan, Statistician in the Business Statistics Division, said: “The volume of production in construction decreased by 4.5% in Quarter 2 2022 when compared with Quarter 1 2022 on a seasonally adjusted basis. On an annual basis there was an increase in production volume of 3.2%. It must be noted that non-essential constructions sites were reopened on a phased basis in Quarter 2 2021 after non-essential sites were prohibited from operating at the beginning of Quarter 1 2021.
With regards to pre-pandemic levels, there was a reduction of 9.8% in construction activity from Quarter 2 2019 to Quarter 2 2022. During the same period the value of construction increased by 8.5%.
Of the Civil, Non-Residential and Residential construction sectors, the Non-Residential sector had the largest quarterly contraction of 6.7% in the seasonally adjusted volume index when compared with Quarter 1 2022. This contrasts to a 2.9% decrease in the Residential sector and a 0.9% reduction in the Civil sector. During the same period there was a 3% increase in the seasonally adjusted value index for construction. On an annual basis the value index increased by 12.6%.”
