The following tables show a further breakdown of gross domestic fixed capital formation from Expenditure. Tables 15 and 17 are broken down by type of asset.

Tables 16 and 18 are broken down by sector of use. This new presentation of these tables is aligned with NACE Rev.2 which is the statistical classification of economic activities in the European Community. The two largest industries in 2020 are Manufacturing (C), and Information and Communication (J), which are dominated by assets related to Research and Development. Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (M) are also dominated by these Research and Development related assets, contributing to a large increase in the 2019 figure and a decline in 2020. Similarly, Administrative and Support Service Activities (N) are dominated by aircraft related to leasing.

Figure 9.1 shows the contribution by asset type to gross fixed capital formation. In 2020 the largest contributor was research & development accounting for 68% of the total.
