Networked Gas Daily Supply and Demand September 2024

Gas demand was 10% higher in September 2024 when compared with September 2023

Key Findings

  • Total gas demand in September 2024 was 4,054 gigawatt hours (GWh), which was 10% higher than the September 2023 figure of 3,690 GWh (See Table 2A).

  • Gas demand by Non-Daily Metered customers was 28% higher in September 2024 compared with September 2023. In September 2024, there were 22 days with a lower maximum daily air temperature recorded at Dublin Airport than in September 2023 (See Tables 2C, 4C, and 5).

  • Gas demand by Power Plants was 7% higher in September 2024 compared with September 2023 (See Table 2B).

  • Imports accounted for 78% of total gas supply in September 2024 with Indigenous Production from the Corrib gas field and biomethane plants accounting for the remaining 22% (See Figure 1 and Tables 1A to 1C).

  • Imports were 18% higher in September 2024 compared with September 2023. Indigenous Production was 12% lower in September 2024 compared with September 2023 (See Tables 1B, 1C, and Figure 1).

  • In the first nine months of 2024, Imports were 0.5% lower and Indigenous Production was down 4.2% compared with the same period in 2023 (See Table A).

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (12 December 2024) published Networked Gas Daily Supply and Demand September 2024.

Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: “Total gas demand in September 2024 was 4,054 gigawatt hours (GWh), which was 10% higher than the September 2023 figure of 3,690 GWh (See Table 2A).

In September 2024, Power Plants accounted for 70% of total gas demand, while Non-Daily Metered customers represented 12% of total gas demand (See Figure 2 and Tables 2A to 2C).

In the first nine months of 2024, total gas demand was 1.3% lower, while gas demand by Power Plants was down 4.1% compared with the same period in 2023 (See Tables A, 2A, and 2B).

Imports were 18% higher in September 2024 compared with September 2023. Indigenous Gas Production was 12% lower in September 2024 compared with September 2023 (See Tables 1B, 1C, and Figure 1).

Gas demand for September 2024 was lowest on 14 September 2024 with daily demand of 94 GWh and was highest on 30 September 2024 with daily demand of 160 GWh (See Table 4A).

Weather-Related Data

In September 2024, there were 22 days with a lower maximum daily air temperature recorded at Dublin Airport than in September 2023. Gas demand by Non-Daily Metered customers was 28% higher in September 2024 compared with September 2023 (See Tables 2C, 4C, and 5).

In September 2024, the 10 days with the highest daily mean wind speed coincided with nine of the lowest days of daily gas demand by Power Plants (See Figure 3, Tables 4B, and 6). In Ireland, the Gas Day begins at 05:00 and ends at 05:00 on the following day.”

Editor's Note

This release includes information on the maximum daily air temperatures at Dublin Airport (See Table 5) and daily mean wind speed at Dublin Airport (See Table 6). Low maximum daily air temperatures in winter usually increases the demand for household heating. The amount of wind can influence the balance between electricity generated from natural gas and wind turbines. Gas customer types are categorised based on their annual consumption. See the Background Notes for the full definition of gas customer types.

Indigenous Production was 4.2% lower in the first nine months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023

In the first nine months of 2024, Imports were 0.5% lower and Indigenous Production was down 4.2% compared with the same period in 2023 (See Tables A, 1B and 1C). Gas demand by Power Plants was 5.4% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of October 2023-September 2024 with October 2022-September 2023 (See Tables A and 2B).

Gas Supply Trends

In September 2024, imports accounted for 78% of total gas supply with Indigenous Production accounting for the remaining 22%. In January 2018, imports accounted for 28% of total gas supply with Indigenous Production accounting for the remaining 72% (See Figure 1 and Tables 1A to 1C).

Gas Demand Trends

Power Plants gas demand in September 2024 was 2,822 GWh, which was 7% higher than the September 2023 figure of 2,625 GWh. Non-Daily Metered gas demand in September 2024 was 478 GWh, which was 28% higher than the September 2023 figure of 374 GWh (See Tables 2B and 2C).

Daily Air Temperature and Mean Wind Speed at Dublin Airport September 2018-2024

In September 2024, the 10 days with the highest daily mean wind speed coincided with nine of the lowest days of daily gas demand by Power Plants (See Figure 3, Tables 4B, and 6). In Ireland, the Gas Day begins at 05:00 and ends at 05:00 on the following day.
