Total metered gas demand in December 2023 was 4,309 gigawatt hours (GWh), which was 23% lower than the December 2022 figure of 5,590 GWh (See Table 2A).
Comparing December 2023 with December 2022, natural gas demand decreased for all categories of customer: Power Plants (-29%); Non-Daily Metered (-17%); Daily Metered (-10%); and Large Daily Metered (-6%) (See Tables 2B to 2E).
A cold spell during 07-16 December 2022 resulted in the mean monthly temperature for December 2022 being well below December 2023 (See Table 5).
Total metered gas demand for the year 2023 was 52,247 GWh which was 7% lower than the 2022 figure of 56,331 GWh (See Table 2A).
Natural gas Imports were 26% lower in December 2023 compared with December 2022. Indigenous Production was 13% lower in December 2023 compared with December 2022 (See Tables 1B, 1C, and Figure 1).
Gas Imports represented 76% of total metered supply in December 2023 with Indigenous Production from the Corrib gas field and biomethane plants accounting for the remaining 24% (See Tables 1A, 1B, and 1C).
Imports accounted for 77% of metered gas supply in 2023 compared with 74% in 2022 (See Tables 1A and 1C).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (27 February 2024) published Networked Gas Daily Supply and Demand December 2023.
Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: “Total metered gas demand in December 2023 was 4,309 GWh, which was 23% lower than the December 2022 figure of 5,590 GWh (See Table 2A).
Total metered gas demand for the year 2023 was 52,247 GWh which was 7% lower than the 2022 figure of 56,331 GWh (See Table 2A).
In December 2023, Power Plants accounted for 53% of total gas demand compared with 59% of total demand in November 2023 and 58% of total demand in December 2022. Power Plants represented 64% of total gas demand for the year 2023 which was the same as 2022 (See Table 2A and 2B).
In December 2023, Non-Daily Metered accounted for 32% of total gas demand compared with 26% of total demand in November 2023 and 30% of total demand in December 2022. Non-Daily Metered represented 19% of total gas demand for the year 2023 which was the same as 2022 (See Table 2A and 2C).
Comparing the year 2023 with 2022, natural gas demand declined for all categories of customer: Non-Daily Metered (-8%); Power Plants (-7%); Large Daily Metered (-6%); and Daily Metered (-5%) (See Tables 2B to 2E).
Gas Supply
Total networked gas supply in December 2023 was 4,313 GWh. The December supply figure was 8% lower than the November 2023 figure of 4,663 GWh (See Table 1A).
In December 2023, Imports accounted for 76% of total gas supply compared with 79% of total supply in November 2023 and 79% of total supply in December 2022. Imports accounted for 77% of total gas supply in 2023 compared with 74% in 2022 (See Tables 1A and 1C).
In December 2023, Indigenous Production accounted for 24% of total gas supply compared with 21% of total supply in November 2023 and 21% of total supply in December 2022. Indigenous Production accounted for 23% of total gas supply in 2023 compared with 26% in 2022 (See Tables 1A and 1B).
Comparing the year 2023 with 2022, natural gas supply reduced for both Imports and Indigenous Production. Imports fell by 3% from 41,548 GWh in 2022 to 40,414 GWh in 2023. Indigenous Production was down by 20% from 14,824 GWh in 2022 to 11,894 GWh in 2023 (See Tables 1B and 1C)."
Meteorological Data
This release includes information on the maximum daily air temperatures at Dublin Airport (See Table 5). Low maximum daily air temperatures in winter usually increase the demand for household heating.
