Total gas demand in August 2024 was 3,517 gigawatt hours (GWh), which was 6% lower than the August 2023 figure of 3,731 GWh (See Table 2A).
Gas demand by Power Plants was 7% lower in August 2024 compared with August 2023. Gas demand by Non-Daily Metered customers was 5% lower in August 2024 compared with August 2023 (See Tables 2B and 2C). Non-Daily Metered customers are largely households and small businesses (See Editor’s Note below).
Imports accounted for 73% of total gas supply in August 2024 with Indigenous Production from the Corrib gas field and biomethane plants accounting for the remaining 27% (See Tables 1A, 1B, 1C, and Figure 1).
Imports were 14% lower in August 2024 compared with August 2023. Indigenous Production was 29% higher in August 2024 compared with August 2023 (See Tables 1B, 1C, and Figure 1). The Corrib gas field was closed for maintenance for some of August 2023 (See Table 3B).
In the first eight months of 2024, Imports were 2.3% lower and Indigenous Production was down 3.1% compared with the same period in 2023 (See Table A).
This release includes information on the maximum daily air temperatures at Dublin Airport (See Table 5) and daily mean wind speed at Dublin Airport (See Table 6). Low maximum daily air temperatures in winter usually increases the demand for household heating. The amount of wind can influence the balance between electricity generated from natural gas and wind turbines. Gas customer types are categorised based on their annual consumption. See the Background Notes for the full definition of gas customer types.
In the first eight months of 2024, Imports were 2.3% lower and Indigenous Production was down 3.1% compared with the same period in 2023 (See Tables A, 1B, and 1C). Gas demand by Power Plants was 7.2% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of September 2023-August 2024 with September 2022-August 2023 (See Tables A and 2B).

In August 2024, there were 21 days with a higher maximum daily air temperature recorded at Dublin Airport than in August 2023. High maximum daily air temperatures typically reduce the demand for household heating. This may have contributed to the 5% lower gas demand by Non-Daily Metered customers in August 2024 compared with August 2023 (See Tables 2C and 5).
In August 2024, the three days with the highest daily gas demand by Power Plants occurred on the 01, 29, and 30 August. In August 2024, the three days with the lowest daily mean wind speed recorded at Dublin Airport were on the 01, 30, and 31 August (See Tables 4B and 6). In Ireland, the Gas Day begins at 05:00 and ends at 05:00 on the following day.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (07 November 2024) published Networked Gas Daily Supply and Demand August 2024.
Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: “Total gas demand in August 2024 was 3,517 gigawatt hours (GWh), which was 6% lower than the August 2023 figure of 3,731 GWh (See Table 2A).
In August 2024, Power Plants accounted for 72% of total gas demand, down from 73% in August 2023 (See Tables 2A, 2B, and Figure 2).
In the first eight months of 2024, total gas demand was 2.5% lower compared with the same period in 2023, while gas demand by Power Plants was down 5.4% compared with the same period in 2023 (See Tables A, 2A, and 2B).
Imports were 14% lower in August 2024 compared with August 2023. Indigenous Gas Production was 29% higher in August 2024 compared with August 2023 (See Tables 1B, 1C, and Figure 1).
Gas demand for August 2024 was lowest on 04 August 2024 with daily demand of 77 GWh and was highest on 30 August 2024 with daily demand of 168 GWh (See Table 4A).
Weather-Related Data
