Networked Gas Daily Consumption May 2023

Warmer May 2023 showed a 17% decrease in household gas consumption compared with May 2022

Key Findings

Total networked gas consumption in May 2023 was 1% lower than in May 2022 (See Table 1).
Compared with May 2022, gas consumption in May 2023 decreased for non-daily metered customers (-17%), daily metered customers (-3%) and large daily metered customers (-9%) (See Table 1).
Gas consumption by power plants in May 2023 was 3% higher than in May 2022 (See Table 1).
Maximum daily temperatures were higher on average in May 2023 than in May 2022 (See Tables 7A and 7B).
Mean wind speeds in May 2023 were lower than in May 2022 on 20 out of 31 days (See Tables 8A and 8B).

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (18 August 2023) published Networked Gas Daily Consumption May 2023.

Commenting on the release Kevin Hunt, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: “Total metered gas consumption was 4,505 gigawatt hours (GWh) for May 2023, which was 1% lower than in May 2022 (See Table 1).

Gas consumption by non-daily metered customers in May 2023 was 17% lower than May 2022 and 45% lower than May 2021 (See Table 1 and Editor's Note). Non-daily metered consumption decreased steadily throughout May 2023, with the lowest 12 days by usage occurring on the last 12 days of the month (See Table 4A).

Gas consumption by daily metered customers in May 2023 was 3% lower than in May 2022, while large daily metered customer gas consumption in May 2023 was 9% below that of May 2022 (See Table 1).

Maximum daily temperatures measured at Dublin airport in May 2023 were higher than in May 2022 on average, particularly for later in the month. Eight of the last ten days of May 2023 had higher temperatures than the corresponding dates in May 2022 (See Tables 7A and 7B).

Gas consumption by power plants in May 2023 increased by 3% compared with May 2022 and 34% compared with May 2021 (See Table 1). Daily mean wind speeds recorded at Dublin Airport in May 2023 were lower than the corresponding dates in May 2022 on 20 out of 31 days (See Tables 8A and 8B). Only one day in May (04 May 2023) saw a mean wind speed of 10 knots or more, compared with 12 days in May 2022 (See Tables 8A and 8B)."

Meteorological Data

This release includes information on the maximum daily air temperature at Dublin airport and the daily mean wind speed at Dublin airport (See Tables 7A, 7B, 8A and 8B). The amount of wind influences the balance between electricity generated from natural gas and from wind turbines. The maximum daily air temperature impacts on household heating demand on colder days.

Editor's Note

Non-daily metered customers have an annual consumption of less than 5.55 GWh. This covers households, as well as some small and medium enterprises. Daily metered customers consume over 5.55 GWh per year, while large daily metered customers consume over 57.5 GWh annually. See Background Notes for further detail.
