Networked Gas Daily Consumption March 2023

Gas consumption was 5% higher in March 2023 compared with March 2022

Online ISSN: 2811-6240
CSO statistical publication, , 11am

Key Findings

  • Total metered gas consumption for March 2023 was 5,217 gigawatt hours (GWh) which was 5% higher than for March 2022 (See Table 1).

  • Gas consumption by power plants for March 2023 was 10% higher than for March 2022 (See Table 1).

  • The period with the highest networked gas consumption by power plants during March 2023 occurred during 01-07 March 2023 (See Table 3A).

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (15 May 2023) published Networked Gas Daily Consumption March 2023.

Commenting on the release Dympna Corry, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "Total metered gas consumption was 5,217 gigawatt hours (GWh) for March 2023 which was 5% higher than for March 2022 (See Table 1).

Gas consumed by power plants to generate electricity in March 2023 was 10% greater than March 2022 (See Table 1).

Gas consumption by power plants was higher on 16 of the first 20 days of March 2023 compared with March 2022. In contrast gas consumption was higher on only one of the remaining 11 days of March 2023 (See Table 3A and 3B).

Gas consumption by daily metered customers for March 2023 was 2% higher than for March 2022, while large daily metered customers was 2% below March 2022 and non-daily metered customers was 1% lower than for March 2022 (See Table 1)."

Meteorological Data

This release includes information on the maximum daily air temperature at Dublin airport and the daily mean wind speed at Dublin airport (See Tables 7A, 7B, 8A and 8B). The amount of wind influences the balance between electricity generated from natural gas and from wind turbines. The maximum daily air temperature impacts on household heating demand on colder days.
