Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (30 October 2025) released Networked Gas Consumption 2024.
Commenting on the release, Kevin Hunt, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division said: "Natural gas consumption rose by 2% in 2024 compared with 2023, for a total of 53,856 Gigawatt hours (GWh) consumed across all sectors (See Table 1).
Networked Gas Consumption by Sector
Figure 1 shows the relative proportion of consumption for power plant (65%), non-residential (24%), and residential (11%) sectors in 2024 (See Figure 1 and Table 1). These proportions were unchanged from 2023.
Gas consumption by the residential sector increased by 3% from 2023 to 2024, following a drop of 10% from 2022-2023 (See Table 1). Total residential gas consumption for 2024 was 6,175 GWh, the second-lowest figure seen over the period 2015-2024 (See Table 1).
Non-residential gas consumption also increased by 3% in 2024 compared with 2023 (See Table 1).
Gas usage by power plants to generate electricity increased by 2% in 2024 compared with 2023 (See Table 1).
Networked Gas Consumption by Quarter
Residential gas consumption was highest in the first quarter of the year, with 45% of the annual total, or 2,779 GWh, used from January to March 2024. Residential consumption was lowest in Q3 (July-September), accounting for 7% of annual consumption (See Figure 2 and Table 2D).
Networked Gas Consumption by County and Dublin Postal District
In the residential sector, the combined total consumption for Dublin County (1,038 GWh) and the Dublin postal districts (2,767 GWh) was 62% of the total for the State (See Table 3B). The corresponding proportion in the non-residential sector, excluding power plants, was 33% (See Table 3A).
Counties Donegal, Sligo, and Leitrim are not connected to the gas network.
Networked Gas Consumption by Median Household
At the State level, the median residential networked gas consumption in 2024 was 7,771 kWh, an increase of 3% over 2023. Median consumption has fallen by 22% since 2015 (9,920 kWh) (See Table 5B).
Figure 3 shows the annual median residential consumption at county level. Figures for Kerry, Longford, Roscommon, and Wexford are based on low meter numbers (See Table 6B) and have been omitted from the graph. For the remaining counties, the lowest county by median residential consumption in 2024 was Waterford (6,255 kWh) and the highest was Dublin County (8,573 kWh) (See Table 5B and Figure 3). By Dublin postal district, median household gas consumption was lowest in Dublin 02 (4,971 kWh) and highest in Dublin 14 (10,178 kWh) (See Table 5C).
Number of Networked Gas Meters
