Compensation of Employees increases by 1.9% in Q4 2021

Compensation of Employees increased by 8.2% in the final quarter of 2021 compared to final quarter of 2020. All sectors experienced growth. The largest increases were seen in Arts, Entertainment and Other Services (22%), Distribution, Transport, Hotels and Restaurants (16.9%) and Information and Communication (15.3%) sectors.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, total Compensation of Employees increased by 1.9% compared to the previous quarter. Most sectors experienced an increase this quarter compared to quarter 3. The largest increase in growth quarter-on-quarter can be seen in Arts, Entertainment and Other Services (5.7%), Financial and Insurance Activities (4.1%) and Information and Communication (3.7%) sectors. While the Public Admin, Education and Health sector experienced declined by 0.7%.

There was a fall in the total Employment Wage Subsidy in Q4 2021 compared to the previous quarter. The Distribution, Transport, Hotels and Restaurants sector receives the largest amount of EWSS payments.

Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme payments make up 3.4% of total Compensation of Employees this quarter, compared to 4% in quarter 3. EWSS payments as a percentage of Compensation of Employees fell across all sectors this quarter compared to the previous period.

The Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme replaced the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme from 1 September 2020. More information on the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme is available on the Revenue.ie website.
