The MNE dominated sectors of the economy contracted by 15.7% overall in the first quarter of 2023. The MNE dominated Industry (excluding Construction) sector recorded a significant decrease in Q1 compared with the previous quarter, falling by 18.2% which outweighed the growth in the Information & Communication sector of 4.0%. The domestically facing Construction sector increased strongly by 12.0% quarter-on-quarter while the Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sector expanded by 15.9% over the period compared with Q4 2022. The Finance & Insurance sector increased by 8.3% in Q1 while the Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants sector grew by 2.7% in the quarter. The Arts & Entertainment sector recorded a marked decline of 15.3% in Q1 while Professional & Administrative services fell by a modest 0.2% over the same period. The domestically dominated Public Administration, Education & Health sector posted a 1.1% increase in Q1 2023 with the Real Estate sector recording a modest increase of 0.5% quarter-on-quarter. Provisional estimates for the first quarter of 2023 indicate that there was a modest decrease of 0.2% in GDP in real terms in Q1 2023 compared with Q1 2022. Gross Value Added (GVA) for the MNE-dominated sectors was broadly unchanged in Q1 2023 compared with Q1 2022. The Information & Communication sector increased by 5.3% in Q1 compared with the equivalent quarter of 2022 while the Industry (excluding Construction) sector declined by a modest 0.4% year-on-year over the same period. Of the domestic based economic sectors, Construction and Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants posted strong results, increasing by 10.0% and 9.2% respectively compared with the same quarter of 2022 while Financial & Insurance activities rose by 6.0% in Q1 2023 compared with Q1 2022. Year-on-year increases were also recorded in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (5.6%), the Arts & Entertainment sector (4.3%), Public Administration, Education & Health (3.8%) and Real Estate activities (1.9%). The Professional & Administrative Services sector contracted by 4.8% year-on-year in Q1 2023. Overall, the domestic based sectors grew by 2.0% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2023 compared with Q1 2022. (See Tables 2.3 and 6.2).
