Ireland’s International Trade in Services recorded a surplus of almost €60bn in 2024

Key Findings

  • Ireland’s Trade in Services recorded a surplus of €59.7bn in 2024, up €41bn from a surplus of €18.6bn in 2023.

  • Total service exports increased by €72.8bn while total service imports rose by €31.7bn in 2024.

  • The US, UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France remain Ireland’s most significant trading partners.

  • Exports of services to Europe rose by €24bn to €221.8bn mainly due to increased computer services exports. Exports to Asia grew by €9bn to €98.8bn also due to rising computer services exports. Exports to the US went up by €9.6bn to €62.3bn in 2024.

  • Imports of services from the US rose by €31.2bn to €217.8bn mainly due to an increase in royalty services imports of €24.2bn and imports of services from Europe grew by €9.9bn to €119.8bn in 2024.

  • Computer services exports at €278.7bn remained the largest export category and royalties/licences service imports at €164.2bn remained the largest import category.

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (16 January 2026) published the International Trade in Services 2024.

Commenting on the release, Ciarán Counihan, Statistician in the International Accounts Division said: "Ireland’s Trade in Services recorded a surplus of €59.7bn in 2024, up €41bn from a surplus of €18.6bn in 2023. This surplus was mainly due to an increase in computer service exports of €44.5bn and business service exports of €23.3bn which were offset by increased royalty imports. The US, UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France remained Ireland’s most significant trading partners in 2024. Computer services exports at €278.7bn remained the largest export category and royalties/licences service imports at €164.2bn remained the largest import category.”

Trade in services surplus of almost €60bn in 2024

Total services exports increased by €84bn from €399bn in 2023 to €483bn in 2024. Total services imports increased by €36bn from €387bn in 2023 to €423bn in 2024. The increase in services exports was principally due to increased computer services exports (+€44.5bn) while the increase in services imports was predominantly due to increased royalty services imports (+€21.1bn).  As a result, the services surplus increased by €41.1bn from €18.6bn in 2023 to €59.7bn in 2024.

Computer services exports at €278.7bn remained the largest export category and accounted for 58% of total services exports in 2024. Royalties/licences services imports, at €164.1bn, along with R&D services imports at €44.8bn, were the largest import categories. When combined, these two import categories accounted for 49% of total services imports in 2024 (see Table 1).

Services exports to Europe increased by €24bn to €222bn between 2023 and 2024

Services exports to Europe (€221.8bn) increased by €24.1bn between 2023 and 2024 due mainly to increased computer services exports (+€16.3bn). The increased computer service exports were predominantly to the UK (+€3.6bn), Germany (+€3.1bn), and France (+€1.8bn) (see Tables 2a - 2c).

Services exports to the US (€62.3bn) increased by €6.2bn in the same period due to increased business services and increased computer service exports. Services exports to Asia increased by €8.9bn to €98.8bn. Exports to Japan (€13.8bn) increased by €0.6bn while exports to China (€12.7bn) increased by €0.8bn.

Services imports from Europe (€119.8bn) increased by €9.9bn between 2023 and 2024 due to increased financial services (€2.1bn) and increased business services imports (€4.8bn). Service imports from the UK increased by €4.1bn while service imports from Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Sweden increased by €1.5bn, €1.3bn, €1bn respectively.

In the same period, services imports from the US (€217.8bn) increased by €30bn due to increased royalty/licences services imports (€24.2bn) while services imports from Asia (€40.4bn) and Offshore centres (€20.1bn) increased by €2.4bn and €1.6bn respectively. (see Tables 2b & 2d).

Ireland’s total services exports and imports at 134.2% of GDP in 2024

Total services exports and imports as a percentage of GDP for selected European countries is presented in Figure 2.  Ireland’s total services exports and imports as percentage of GDP at 145.7% was the third highest in Europe in 2024.
